Pirates

When starting out in EVE, hunting down lawless pirates is a good idea as any. It gives you new modules to play with, some ISK in reward from CONCORD for ridding the world of this endless menace and it's a good workout before you get into real combat with players or high end pirates.

To hunt pirates, do the following:

Go to a nearby asteroid field in your system. You can access them via the shortcut menu left of the system name or by right clicking on an asteroid belt triangle in the ship UI
In asteroid belts, pirates are indicated by + , start attacking them by right-clicking on it and selecting 'Lock Target' from the menu.
When you have gotten an target lock, you activate your weapons to start shooting them. Take a good look at the attributes of your weapon, it has an optimal range, that you should keep close to so you get the best efficiency.
Once you have destroyed the pirate you can go to the cargo container he dropped and get the loot from it.

After you have a full cargo hold, return to your home station and drop the items in your Item/Hangar Floor. With modules, you are also able to Reprocess it into minerals, but that is generally not recommended until you know what is good and what is bad loot.

Tip: Start in high security systems, and work your way down.
