While in-space, you can open up 3 additional panels of information:

Scanner - this displays a list of all objects in space which you can view with your current scanning equipment.
Log - tracks all of your actions, from where you have warped to when you docked. Note that your chat conversations are not included in the Log.

When docked at a station, you can find more panel selections.
