Making friends and getting help

<< Death comes to us all

This guide was designed to help you through your first few hours in the world of EVE. Hopefully, by following these simple instructions, you'll soon be expanding your range of skills and eventually be able to afford a few basic modules or expanding your small fleet of ships.

There is of course still much more to learn, including: various aspects of combat combat, piracy, bounty-hunting, corporation management, exploration, trade, manufacture and research. These are all advanced gameplay features you may like to eventually investigate or not, depending on what suits your preferred style of play.

The best place to learn your trade is through experience and interaction. There are multitudes of EVE players eager to help out a new player and pass on what they have learned. Remember that everyone in the game was at one time a "newbie" like yourself.

The first and easiest place to look for help is from your corporation colleagues, many of whom are greatly experienced players and more than willing to pass on various hints and tips. All players begin in a NPC corporation and some never leave, so there is always a mixture of both new and old players alike available to you there. If it isn’t open already, simply click on the "Channel" icon to open the Chat window, select the "Corp" tab and start making friends. (NOTE: Your Chat window may be minimized at the bottom of screen. Click on the flashing tab to bring it back.)

You will also find help in the "Help" Channel. This chat channel is not open by default, so you will need to click on the "Channel" icon in your NeoCom to open it. Scroll through the list of standard channels until you find it and click "Join". (NOTE: This channel is frequented by EVE volunteers and Game Masters who are specifically there to help you, so it can be quite lively.)

If you would prefer to search the in-game reference guide for more information, open the "Browser" window and make a selection. You can find the beginning tutorial missions here if you need a refresher course but don't want to repeat the tutorial.

If you cannot find help in-game, try the Official forums on www.eve-online.com. The "New Citizen's Questions and Answers" and "Known Issues and Workarounds" forums located in the Information Center section should be your first stop. Forums within the "Inside Eve" section host discussions on various aspects of gameplay. The "Communication Center" is geared more towards players, corporations and alliances – the social hub of EVE Online.

Finally there are dozens of helpful websites created by EVE fans, some offering in-game news, others hosting helpful forums and player-written tutorials. We have compiled a list of links to the most popular sites on http://www.eve-online.com/community/fansites.asp and you can select one by clicking the link to a site from our roster. A flag represents the primary language used on the site so that players can easily find resources in their native languages.
