(However much you respect or despise the law, remember that there is only one thing worse than a CONCORD Police Captain powering its weapons: a CONCORD bureaucrat waving a partially-completed application form.)
Before being issued with your first vessel and a security rating (which is required to assume berthing privileges), you must first register your details with the authorities that police "named space" throughout the EVE universe.
Double-click the EVE icon on your desktop or click "Play EVE" via the Windows START menu. After you have agreed to the terms of the End User License Agreement, you will be prompted to enter your username and password, ensure that "Tranquility" is selected as the server and click "Connect".
At the "Select Or Create Character" screen, click one of the three EMPTY character slots. (NOTE: When you have completed the creation process for a new character, the information about this persona will be automatically saved.)
Basic information is available for each of the four playable races by moving your mouse over the "i" icon. This information will help you determine which race to select for your character. (NOTE: More in-depth descriptions of the races' origins, history and politics can be found here.)
Now select a bloodline and your character’s gender. Bloodlines are the major ethnic and tribal factions within your chosen race. Move the mouse over the "i" icon to reveal more information on each bloodline. The "book" icon reveals the basic skills you will receive for that bloodline, while the lower icon will show its basic starting attributes. (NOTE: You can click on the left-hand arrow icon to return to the previous selection screen, but all selections will be lost.)
The "appearance" may seem complicated at first glance, but don't be intimidated. The tools are simple but powerful. The interface is effectively divided into three areas: on the left are the options to select backgrounds, clothing, accessories and various ‘skin deep’ attributes; on the right are the physical attribute scales that will dictate the shape and structure of your character’s facial features; in the center are the positioning controls that you can use to roll the eyes and head, or you can click and hold the left-mouse button in the main screen to move the entire body. Take your time to get your look just right. The final snapshot image you create is how other players will see you not only in-game, but on the Official EVE forums, as well.
After you have chosen a name, it is time to determine your starting set of attributes and skills. Your basic attributes will have been determined by your race, bloodline and gender, but by generating a learning path you can enhance your starting attributes and increase the number and variety of trained skills you have when you begin the game. Select one of the careers from the drop-down menu in the bottom right of the screen or, if you would like to create a more unique skillset, choose the "Custom" option. (NOTE: If you choose a preset option such as "Leader", as soon as you click the arrow to proceed, you will return to the Character Selection screen and it will be too late to make any changes.)
Click on the new character you have just created to enter the world of EVE.
